Media Release – Electra Business Awards Winners Announced for 2018

Kenakena School named Business of the Year

An award laden evening for Kenakena School has ended with the school being named the overall 2018 Electra Business of the Year.

Kenakena School on the Kapiti Coast was awarded the supreme Business of the Year Award at the Electra Kapiti Horowhenua Business Awards gala dinner in Levin on Friday, 12 October 2018.  It was a big evening for the school as they also received the Large Business Excellence Award, and the Employer of Choice and New Thinking Achievement Awards.

Located at Paraparaumu Beach, Kenakena School is a 500 student co-educational school taking students from 5 to 13 years of age through the full eight years of their primary schooling, delivering programmes rich in learning experiences where the development of thinking skills is a feature.

Bruce McDonald, Principal of Kenakena School, says the school proudly promotes itself as a place where every single person is engaged in the continuous gathering and sharing of knowledge.  “As active, caring members of our community, we’ve gained an understanding of what our community needs from us.  We’ve learned that when we harness the power of excitement and positivity – students, whanau and staff alike are motivated to give more of themselves and gain more in return.”

In announcing the supreme award winner, the judges highlighted Kenakena School’s governance, management and staffing structures, its vibrant and inclusive culture, and engaging and empowering leadership.  “We were hugely impressed with Kenakena School’s culture, business management, performance and profile within the community it serves.  The activities undertaken by the school to ensure its success as well as that of the community and the environment are outstanding.  The team clearly has a highly developed market-led approach to both what services the school should provide and how to provide it.  This is a standout business on every measure, and we applaud Bruce and his team for the impact they have on the individual lives of staff, students and the wider life of the school’s community.”

In an extremely competitive evening, Woodhaven Gardens received the Highly Commended Award as well as the “Give Where You Live” Achievement Award.  The Horowhenua based, family owned market garden that employs more than 160 people impressed the judges with their strategic focus and culture, noting that: “It was apparent that Woodhaven is a very market and strategically focused company, recognising and dealing with the challenges in an environment largely controlled by the big players.  Congratulations on the growth the company has achieved in all financial areas as well as the increase in productivity, sales and market share.  We anticipate great things for Woodhaven over the coming years and will follow their progress with interest and anticipation.”
